- Setting; New Jersey & New York, Great Depression
- Story follows James J. Braddock, as a young boxer from New York
- Ends up becoming a "wash up" and cannot fight anymore
- Works on the docks to get a little change to support his family
- Braddock gets another chance at boxing, and wins, but breaks his hand
- Start to train again and get back into the league
- Final fight with Max Baer for championship title
- Braddock comes out on top
